Alexander Joseph produces a unique range of luxury cordless lamps that combine high-end design with a smart re-charging, compact lighting system. These lamps are handcrafted in the UK and aimed at both private collectors and premium interior designers. They include a large variety of different, custom-designed lamps and shades with an array of shade materials, colours and designs. GB Electronics was brought in to develop the technology that made cordless, mains-equivalent lighting possible in compact and elegant forms.
Alexander Joseph approached GBE, tasking us with the creation of a bespoke battery-powered, recharging, lighting system that would fit inside their elegant, cordless lamps. Due to the nature of the products, the electronics within the lamps had to be unobtrusive and fit within their compact design to preserve the aesthetic integrity of the lamp bodies. These had to offer mains-level brightness for luxury table lamps which they sought to use in high-end locations such as yachts, casinos, penthouse suits and hotels. The lamps required an extended runtime to ensure their functionality, with batteries allowing 3-4 weeks of typical use between charges. Also, the electronics within the lamps had to undergo compliance testing in line with international safety and efficiency standards.

GBE approached the project with a clear objective: to develop a compact power solution that could be seamlessly integrated into Alexander Joseph’s sleek, lightweight lamp designs; their key selling point. We worked closely with Alexander Joseph’s design team from the outset to fully understand the artistic vision and structural constraints unique to each bespoke lamp, also accommodating for the bulb they developed especially for their lamps.
This close collaboration led us to develop custom electronics, including ultra-compact, low-voltage drivers and power supplies; all tailored to fit within the limited space of the lamp bases. Our design team explored multiple solutions, ultimately creating a proprietary battery, control, and charging system that met both performance and aesthetic goals.
Another key challenge was compliance with global safety certifications to facilitate international market access and consumer confidence. Thanks to our in-house compliance capabilities, we were able to test components at every stage of development, ensuring alignment with Alexander Joseph’s requirements and compliance with all necessary certifications. We also designed the system to be scalable, making it adaptable to various lamp shapes and sizes across the product range.
Throughout the process, we worked side-by-side with Alexander Joseph, keeping the technology, user experience, and commercial needs in perfect alignment from concept to completion.
GBE were able to create an appropriate, custom-designed PCB that could fit discreetly within the limited base and body of the lamps, providing the power and battery capabilities that Alexander Joseph tasked us with creating. This worked compatibly with their lightbulb design, providing the required mains-level brightness with low-voltage control drivers.
We designed a smart charging solution using a safe, universal 100-240V AC input, allowing the lamps to be charged easily and safely in any market worldwide. Each lamp now offers 52–56 hours of continuous illumination on a single charge, which is well-suited to their use in yachts, hotels and casinos as these only require charging every 3-4 weeks, allowing them to truly fulfil their marketed ‘cordless’ function. The battery was a part-bespoke design, obtained from one of GBE’s valued suppliers, with all appropriate compliance testing and certification.
To support the handcrafted and often varied lamp designs, we ensured the technology was highly adaptable. This flexibility allowed our system to integrate seamlessly across multiple collections, regardless of the material or shape.
All components were rigorously tested in-house to meet and exceed global standards, including CE, RoHS, REACH, WEEE, and ERP compliance. The final solution is elegant, efficient, and invisible, empowering Alexander Joseph to offer high-end cordless lighting without compromising on style, performance, or safety.
